BROEI is a platform for young people aged 16 to 30, offering a space to create, think, and innovate. A diverse range of organizations, collectives, and individuals can find their place here. BROEI is built around three core pillars, which most of our continuous organisations fall under: DEVELOPMENT & ENTREPRENEURSHIP, EXPRESSION & CREATIVITY, and TECHNOLOGY & SUSTAINABILITY. We place a strong focus on collaboration and connection, creating an open space where people can learn from one another, inspire and challenge each other, build businesses, and work together to shape new stories.

2020-2025
Broei began in 2020 as an experiment inside the Geraard de Duivelsteen. For three years, we explored and created, organizing countless activities and discovering what we could do with the given space and resources. In 2023, during the renovation of the Duivelsteen, we moved to a whole new neighborhood: Nieuwland. Along with all our furniture, we brought the knowledge, energy, and experiences we had gathered over the past three years. Our new home, a spacious hangar at Nieuwland 69, became the next chapter of our journey. After three unforgettable years in the castle and three inspiring years in the hangar, we’ve grown alongside our spaces and our community. Surrounded by wonderful people, lively workshops, Broeilab events, parties, exhibitions, and more, we’ve witnessed countless ideas come to life. This ever-evolving journey continues to fuel our passion for collaboration, creativity, and innovation. You can discover more about our projects and milestones in our annual report.

2026
We’re getting ready for our fourth year in our cozy hangar!
This year will be a little different, we’ll be open from May to October, but July and August will be reserved for internal projects. That means the bar and restaurant will be closed during those two months.
In 2027, we’ll be moving back to the Geraard de Duivelsteen. Still, we hope to keep part of Broei alive here in the Tolhuis–Sluis–Hammeke neighborhood, so we can continue nurturing the valuable connections and knowledge we’ve built over the past years.
We’re excited for another inspiring season filled with ideas, creativity, and collaboration.

Who can be part of Broei?
Do you have an idea, concept, start-up, dream, project,... that you want to brush up on with others? Do you ever dare to look over the wall of your own organization? Are you looking for a place where you can grow your plan? Then Broei is the space you are looking for. And then you are our ideal guest!
You can register for the open call if you are on of the following
- are between 16 and 30 years old
- are an organisation/individual that works (or would like to work) with young people between 16 and 30 years old
- works with young people seeking opportunities or knows someone who could use a helping hand
Who is responsible?
When you bring a group of young people together, it often sparks with a vibrant energy and creativity. To ensure everything runs smoothly, our dedicated team Broei is here to help They provide the necessary information and advice, as well as technical and logistical support. You are the boss over your own project and ask help to team Broei where necessary. Together, we take care of the building and its surroundings, creating a space where ideas can thrive.
Location?
For the first three years, Broei was based within the historic walls of Geeraard De Duivelsteen. While we’re renovating the castle and planning to return in 2026, we’ve made the spacious hangar at Nieuwland our current home. Each year, we alter the space to meet the evolving needs of our community, designing everything to be as multifunctional as possible.
What kind of projects can I come to Broei for?
We aim to maintain a wide range of project possibilities here at Broei. Our primary focus revolves around three key pillars: DEVELOPMENT & ENTREPRENEURSHIP, EXPRESSION & CREATIVITY and TECHNOLOGY & SUSTAINABILITY. We encourage an open approach that allows room for experimentation and growth. The essential requirement is that your project proposal is designed by and for individuals aged 16 to 30 years old.
We can also make minor adjustments to the space to ensure that you can fully develop your project or organization within Broei.
What about castle Duivelsteen?
In 2027, we’ll be moving back to the fully renovated Geraard de Duivelsteen, where Broei will be open year-round instead of six months. At the same time, we hope to keep a part of Broei alive in the Tolhuis–Sluis–Hammeke neighborhood, so we don’t lose the valuable connections and knowledge we’ve built over the past years. In the second half of 2026, once the major renovations in the castle are complete, we’ll start experimenting and building the furniture. The grand reopening is planned for February 2027.

Wie kan deel uitmaken van Broei?
Heb je een idee, concept, start-up, droom, project,... dat je wilt aanscherpen met anderen? Durf je ooit over de muur van je eigen organisatie te kijken? Ben je op zoek naar een plek waar je jouw plan kunt laten groeien? Dan is Broei de ruimte die je zoekt. En dan ben jij onze ideale gast!
Je kunt je inschrijven voor de open call als je:
- tussen 16 en 30 jaar oud bent
- een organisatie/persoon bent die werkt (of zou willen werken) met jongeren tussen 16 en 30 jaar oud
- werkt met jongeren die kansen zoeken of iemand kent die een helpende hand kan gebruiken
Wie is verantwoordelijk?
We staan klaar met een team van 8 medewerkers om ervoor te zorgen dat Broei soepel verloopt. Ze verschaffen de nodige informatie en advies, technische en logistieke ondersteuning en de zorgen voor het ontstaan van een community. Ze bemoeien zich niet met het creatieve proces. In ruil voor onderdak en ondersteuning zorgen onze gasten voor het pand als een goede huisvader.
Locatie?
Tot dit jaar was Broei gevestigd binnen de muren van de Geraard de Duivelsteen. Dat gebouw zal de komende jaren enkele renovaties ondergaan zodat we binnenkort ruimte kunnen bieden aan jongeren in een verbeterd gebouw. In de tussentijd vullen we een leeg magazijn, Nieuwland 65 9000 Gent. We doen dit in samenwerking met de stad Gent, omdat Gent in 2024 de Europese Jeugdhoofdstad zal zijn.
Voor wat voor soort projecten kan ik naar Broei komen?
We streven ernaar hier bij Broei een breed scala aan projectmogelijkheden te behouden. Onze primaire focus draait om drie kernpijlers: Ontwikkelen & Ondernemerschap, Technologie & Duurzaamheid, en Creativiteit & Expressie. We moedigen een open benadering aan die ruimte biedt voor experimentatie en groei. De belangrijkste voorwaarde is dat jouw projectvoorstel is ontworpen door en voor personen van 16 tot 30 jaar oud. We kunnen ook kleine aanpassingen aan de ruimte doen om ervoor te zorgen dat je jouw project of organisatie volledig kunt ontwikkelen binnen Broei.
Wat met het Duivelsteen?
In 2027 verhuizen we terug naar het volledig gerenoveerde Geraard de Duivelsteen, waar Broei het hele jaar open zal zijn in plaats van zes maanden. Tegelijk hopen we een deel van Broei levend te houden in de buurt Tolhuis–Sluis–Hammeke, zodat we de waardevolle verbindingen en kennis die we in de afgelopen jaren hebben opgebouwd, niet verliezen. In de tweede helft van 2026, zodra de grote renovaties in het kasteel zijn voltooid, beginnen we met experimenteren en het bouwen van het meubilair. De grote heropening is gepland voor februari 2027.
